DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A suspect has been arrested in connection with AsYelling in an apartment complex in North Carolina on Wednesday evening.

Police say someone shot four people, including 27-year-old Nelson Mendez-Vasquez, who died in the hospital, and another woman who suffered life-threatening injuries.

“My husband told me about it this morning,” said a Duke Manor resident. “He told me he heard gunshots.”

Evidence markers lined the floor at the Duke Manor Apartments. Several people who live there tell CBS 17 they heard at least 10 gunshots.

“This is really surprising,” said neighbor Michael Shore. “I walk around here a lot, both during the day and at night. This is really shocking. I know there is crime, but I didn’t think we would experience something like this. But honestly, it’s really scary.”

Officers responded to Duke University Hospital for a call about a gunshot wound. There they found all four victims.

Police arrested 29-year-old Yeltsin Cinto Orozco. He is charged with first-degree murder.

CBS 17 spoke with a recent Duke graduate who lives in the neighborhood. He said he didn’t feel safe.

“Anything near campus is always a target, and those are usually the most convenient areas for us,” he said. “So there aren’t really a lot of options.”

At least 66 people have been shot in Durham so far this year, an increase compared to 2023, according to police statistics released last week.

“It’s about limiting the types of activities or things we can do and trying to divert our lives from that,” the recent Duke graduate said.

Investigators are currently still investigating what happened.
