Suspected gunman arrested hours after shooting, carjacking 16-year-old in Deer Park

HOUSTON – A teenager is recovering in hospital after being carjacked and shot in the head in front of his mother Tuesday night.

The accused gunman was captured hours later in southwest Houston.

The 16-year-old and his mother had just pulled into the parking lot of a Jimmy John’s on Spencer Highway in Deer Park shortly after 9 p.m. That’s when the gunman approached and demanded their car.

As they exited the plane, police said the gunman shot the teen in the chest. He was then flown to Memorial Hermann where, at last check, Deer Park police said he was in stable condition.

Meanwhile, the unidentified shooter gave Baytown police a chase after spotting him about three hours later. Investigators say he headed north out of Baytown toward U.S. 90 and crossed the Ship Channel Bridge. Harris County Precinct 8 deputies took over once the shooter entered Clear Lake and then returned to the south-central area of ​​Highway 288.

The shooter temporarily eluded law enforcement, but Houston Police Department K9 officers tracked him down near Bellfort and resumed the pursuit. It ended when the shooter/carjacker crashed into parked cars and a detached garage.

He was taken into custody by police. The Deer Park Police Department and HPD are working together to resolve the charges with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
