‘Million-pound homes stand next to housing estates’: How a wealthy London neighbourhood became deeply divided

The London neighbourhood of Ladbroke Grove has seen conflict before. In the summer of 1958, after a decade of migration to Britain from the Caribbean, young white men attacked black residents in an outbreak of racist violence that became better known as the Notting Hill Riots. In 1970, a protest by West Indian activists against police racism culminated in further violent clashes. Members of a group called the Mangrove Nine – named after a local Caribbean restaurant that was repeatedly the target of racist attacks – attacked black residents and attacked the rest of the city.
