Corning man dies after excavator overturns in Madison County Creek

An Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy died Thursday after an off-duty accident in which an excavator he was operating plunged into a creek in Madison County, trapping him in the flooded cab. According to Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes, 34-year-old Nicholas Koeppe , of Corning, was alone around 8 a.m. Thursday morning when he attempted to drive an excavator over a bridge on private property that spanned a body of water. The bridge collapsed and the excavator rolled into the water, trapping Koeppe beneath the surface. A witness called 911 and was able to pull Koeppe out as first responders arrived. Koeppe was flown to a Des Moines hospital, where he later died from his injuries. According to Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes, 34-year-old Nicholas Koeppe of Corning was alone around 8 a.m. Thursday morning when he attempted to drive an excavator over a bridge on private property that spanned a body of water. The bridge collapsed, the excavator rolled into the water and Koeppe got stuck under the surface.

A witness called 911 and was able to pull Koeppe out as first responders arrived. Koeppe was flown to a hospital in Des Moines, where he later died of his injuries.

Koeppe was an Adams County deputy but was off duty and working a part-time job at the time of the incident.
