What to expect

The third heat wave of 2024 is now in full swing and will last through Wednesday. Lows on Sunday night will not be as low, falling mainly to the mid and upper 70s. Patchy fog is again possible, especially in areas that received rain on Sunday and along the coast.

Temperatures will continue to rise on Monday, reaching between 35 and 40 degrees, while the heat index may rise above 38 degrees in many areas. Thunderstorms will return in the afternoon and evening, with the greatest chance in our northwest suburbs. Although the danger is low, isolated severe weather is possible.

The yellow warning remains in effect until Wednesday.

The current heat wave is expected to be the most intense so far this year. The peak heat is expected to arrive on Tuesday, when many places in New Jersey could hit the 100-degree mark. With high humidity, heat indices will go through the roof, reaching as high as 110. The forecast high temperature of 97 degrees in Central Park would be the highest temperature since 2021. It’s also likely that our average number of 90-degree days per year will be reached once the heat wave ends. The average is 15, and we’re already at 12 in mid-July.

A cold front will arrive later on Wednesday to provide relief. The front can trigger some strong to severe thunderstorms, but behind it a much more refreshing air mass will move in.
