The retired Brookings police chief has died

BROOKINGS, SD (KELO) — Retired Brookings Police Chief Andrew “Douglas/Doug” Filholm has died at the age of 91.

According to the Brookings Police Department (BPD), Filholm died on May 4 in the Brookview neighborhood of Brookings.

Filholm was Brookings police chief from 1964 to 1983. His career with the BPD spanned more than 26 years. Filholm started the Safety Town program, an early childhood education program that taught young children about safety. The program continues to this day.

After his retirement, he was elected Brookings Police and Fire City Commissioner.

A celebration of life will be held May 31 at Rudes Funeral Home. Filholm’s funeral will be June 1 in Brookings at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
