Man raped defenseless sick woman while she waited for ambulance

A man “chased” and raped a defenseless woman who was waiting for an ambulance. The emergency dispatcher alerted the police to the incidents after Jagdeep Singh spoke to the victim shortly before the incident.

The rape occurred in the early hours of Friday 12 January this year after the victim, a 21-year-old woman, was out with friends in Leicester city centre. When she returned to her friend’s house, she called a taxi and waited in Leicester’s Western Road.

While she was waiting, she began to feel unwell and called an ambulance. During the call, Singh approached the victim and offered his help. He was heard by the 999 call operator, who immediately alerted the police.

However, when they arrived at Western Road, the woman was not there. Her parents were also unable to contact her and reported her missing.

Later that morning, the victim contacted her parents to report that she had been raped by a man in a flat. Her description of the flat led officers to Singh, 35, of Leicester’s Harrow Road.

In interviews, he denied forcing the victim to have sex, claiming instead that it was consensual. He also claimed to officers that he approached her in the first place because he was concerned for her well-being and actually wanted to help her get to a safe place.

Singh was charged by Leicestershire Police and appeared at Leicester Crown Court this week, but pleaded guilty to raping the woman on the second day. He was sentenced in court on Tuesday (July 9) to eight years in prison and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Detective Constable Joe Mulvany, of the police’s Signal Team, was the investigating officer. He said: “Throughout the investigation, Singh maintained his innocence and that he had participated in sexual acts with the victim, but that it was all consensual. We are pleased that he has pleaded guilty and spared the victim the agony of having to relive what happened to her in the courtroom.”

“This investigation and trial have by no means been easy for her. She has shown tremendous courage throughout and we hope she now feels that justice has been done.

“(Singh) exploited a vulnerable person for his own gratification. The victim was in no condition to consent to anything and was obviously distressed when he encountered her on the street.

“We hope that this case and its outcome will reassure people and give victims the courage to come forward and tell what happened to them. We have specialist staff who can help you through the process and put you in touch with other support organisations.”
