Cemetery in Thailand organizes film night for the dead, Internet calls it “creepy”

A cemetery in Thailand has shocked the Internet by showing films for the dead. According to the South China Morning PostThe final resting place in Nakhon Ratchasima province in northeastern Thailand is home to nearly 3,000 descendants. In June, cemetery officials carefully arranged rows of empty chairs and screened a film for the dead to soothe the souls of those who have passed on to the afterlife.

The graves mostly belong to the descendants of people from China who migrated to Thailand, the newspaper reported. The film screenings were held from June 2 to June 6. Only four staff members were present during the open-air show, and the films were shown every day from 7 p.m. to midnight. The staff members also held a feast for the dead and burned paper offerings such as food, model houses, vehicles, clothing and everyday items.

The event was organised to commemorate the dead and provide them with a modern form of entertainment. Organisers said that in many Chinese communities in Thailand, it is a traditional custom to show films for the deceased after the Ching Ming Festival or before the Dragon Boat Festival.

The event organizer said he was initially scared of showing films in a cemetery. However, he described the experience as unique and positive. On social media, users shared different reactions. “This scary film screening is actually a very heartfelt idea to give the deceased a sense of satisfaction and the living a sense of reassurance,” wrote one user.

In the meantime SCMP reported that the Chinese community in Thailand believes that spirits can linger in the human world due to unfulfilled wishes. In their opinion, through such ceremonies, these souls can be comforted and feel remembered and respected, which in turn reduces their “interference” with the living.

Buddhists in Thailand also believe in reincarnation and life after death. Many of them believe that after death, the soul enters a new cycle of rebirth. Therefore, showing films to the dead is a way to comfort the departed, give them a sense of satisfaction and ensure their rebirth.

It is noteworthy, for example, that last year a Thai man held a ghost wedding with his girlfriend who died of leukemia.
