Man who raped woman in Bristol sentenced to eight years in prison

Judge Moira Macmillan expressed her admiration for the victim because she did not allow herself to be defined by what happened.

Acting Sergeant Alastair Lea praised the woman for her “great courage” throughout the investigation and trial.

“The perpetrator of a sexual offense is the only person who should feel shame or guilt,” he said.

“But Yonas Gebreysus did not confess to his crime, so she had to relive what had happened in court.

“Our message to anyone else who is a victim of any kind of sexual assault and is afraid to come forward is: we will believe you, we will investigate, and we will help you access support.”
