Houston Dynamo FC fall 3-2 to Real Salt Lake away

SANDY, Utah (July 3, 2024) – Houston Dynamo FC Houston lost 3-2 on the road to Real Salt Lake at First America Field tonight, ending Houston’s six-match unbeaten streak.

In two consecutive weeks, move forward Aliyu Ibrahim opened the scoring with a goal in the first ten minutes of the match. The eighth-minute goal came when the striker Sebastian Kowalczykwho recorded his first assist of the season, raced into the final third of the pitch and played the ball to the edge of the box for Ibrahim. The 22-year-old curled the ball around the keeper for his team-record sixth goal of the season.

Salt Lake equalized in the 22nd minute when Andrés Gómez took advantage of a miscommunication from the Houston back line.

Salt Lake took the lead in the 42nd minute when Diego Luna’s shot from outside the box sailed past goalkeeper Steve Clark and landed inside the far post.

Houston equalized in the 54th minute when captain Hector Herrera shot a cross into the box forward Sebas Ferreira who grazed defender Andrew Brody for an own goal.

Salt Lake regained the lead in the 67th minute when Braian Ojeda placed the ball in the bottom right corner of the net.

Houston created a chance in the 25th minute when defender Griffin Dorsey Salt Lake City goalkeeper Zac MacMath managed to find his way to the right side of the penalty area and passed the ball to Kowalczyk. The 25-year-old managed to shoot in a crowded area, but his attempt was blocked by a Salt Lake City defender, allowing goalkeeper Zac MacMath to recover the ball.

Goalie Steve Clark The goalkeeper took over in the 33rd minute, diving right to block Luna’s shot from the edge of the box. The move marked one of the veteran goalkeeper’s four saves on the night.

Dynamo nearly equalised in first-half injury time when Houston stringed together a series of passes that ended up at Dorsey’s feet, but the American’s powerful effort from the edge of the box was fired just over the crossbar.

Salt Lake nearly scored a third goal in the 47th minute, but Dorsey stepped up his game by blocking Gómez’s shot on the goal line to keep the score at 2-1.

Clark was called into action again in the 82nd minute, stepping up to deny Matt Crooks a shot in the box after a Salt Lake counterattack. The veteran goalkeeper stepped up again in the 88th minute to cut out Chicho Arango on a goalbound drive.

In a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Final, Houston will host LAFC on Sunday, July 7, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. CT at Shell Energy Stadium. Tickets for that match are available HERE.
