At least 27 dead in mass panic at religious event in India

LUCKNOW, India (AP) — At least 27 people were killed in a stampede during a religious gathering in northern India, officials said.

More than 150 people were hospitalized after the clash in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, health official Umesh Tripathi said, adding the death toll could rise.

Police told the Press Trust of India news agency that the stampede occurred due to overcrowding, but did not provide any information on how many people had gathered for the event.
