2 dead, 1 missing and dozens injured in northern Russia after passenger train derails

MOSCOW (AP) — At least two people died and another is missing when a passenger train derailed in northern Russia, a state railway company said Thursday.

The train with 14 carriages derailed on Wednesday evening in the northern Russian republic of Komi, Russian Railways said. Nine carriages derailed. Up to 50 people were injured, the Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing emergency services.

The train carrying 232 passengers was travelling from Vorkuta, a coal mining town in northern Komi, to the southern city of Novorossiysk, Russian Railways said. Heavy rain, which washed away parts of the tracks, was said to be the likely cause of the derailment.

Russian Railways has pledged to pay 2 million rubles (just under $22,900) to the families of those killed in the derailment, in addition to its insurance settlement of 2.025 million rubles (about $23,100). The injured who were hospitalized will receive 1 million rubles (about $11,400) each, and those who required outpatient medical care will receive 500,000 rubles (about $5,700), the company said.
