16-year-old girl killed, 8-year-old child injured in hit-and-run in Queens

A 16-year-old girl was killed and her 8-year-old sister was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash outside a Queens school on Wednesday – the last day of the school year, police said.

According to police, the girls were in the crosswalk in front of IS 125 Thom J. McCann on 47th Avenue near 46th Street in Sunnyside at about 3:25 p.m. when the driver of a white Ford truck headed west on the avenue.

When the driver turned left onto 46th Street, he collided with them and ran over the 16-year-old, police and other sources said.

The teenager’s younger sister was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, according to an NYPD chief on the scene.

There was no school crossing guard on duty when students were dismissed at 1 p.m. on Wednesday for the last day of school before the summer holidays, the school’s principal said.

As the new graduates left the middle school, the teenager lay dying on the street with her mother by her side, according to a 15-year-old student who had just received his diploma.

“When I came out, she was on the ground,” Justin Castillo told the Daily News. “She was still alive, but she looked like she had lost a part of herself.”

The teenager, whose name was not immediately released, died on the street.

“Her mother tried to be strong, but she was close to losing her mind,” Castillo said. “It was horrible.”

Police later found the truck about a block from the intersection and arrested the driver, police at the scene said.
