The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating an incident involving “explosive munitions” on Ontario Street in the community of Schreiber.

The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating an incident involving “explosive munitions” on Ontario Street in the community of Schreiber.

The northwestern Ontario municipality issued an emergency warning shortly before 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, urging residents and businesses to evacuate the following areas:

  • Erie Street.
  • Ontario Street.
  • Manitoba Street.
  • Quebec Street.
  • Winnipeg Street at the eastern end of Ontario Street.

Increased police presence is expected in the afternoon.

On social media, the OPP said officers are investigating and are asking residents to stay away while officers are working.

Further details are not immediately available, but CBC Thunder Bay will update the story as soon as we know more.

Schreiber’s Recreation Center is open to anyone seeking shelter until the incident is resolved.

City officials said they would publish a post later Wednesday to let people know when they can safely return to their homes.
