Police identify woman shot in St. Pete apartment, suspect still at large

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – Police say a woman was shot and killed in a St. Petersburg apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

St. Petersburg police said officers responded to a 911 call about a shooting at the Reserve at Lake Pointe Apartments on Lynn Lake Drive South around 6 a.m.

When they arrived, they found the woman, later identified as 25-year-old Yvonne Abernathy. Police said Abernathy lived in the complex and was shot in the hallway outside her apartment.

Abernathy has died and the suspect is not in custody, authorities said.

“We had a sniffer dog out here, there was a huge operation and we searched the entire complex to find the shooter. The search was completed. We did not find him,” said St. Pete police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez.

Police were busy interviewing witnesses early Tuesday morning.

“We still need to talk to all the witnesses to determine whether or not the victim knew the suspect, but they were outside the apartment together just before 6 a.m. this morning,” Fernandez said. “That’s all we know right now, and we know that she was shot and killed right at the scene, and that she was sharing the apartment with a family member.”

In just four months, a new Florida law will make it illegal to sleep in public places or parks. State leaders who support the law say it will help push people in need into shelters and assistance programs, but Aaron Swift of the Homeless Leadership Alliance of Pinellas warns it could lead to more problems.
