“When will it stop” | 5 people killed in Mother’s Day weekend shootings in Louisville | Crime reports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A series of shootings in Louisville left five people dead in just 24 hours, all over Mother’s Day weekend.

The first fatal shooting occurred early Saturday morning near Iroquois Park. Later that afternoon, someone shot a man in the Lyndon area. Shortly afterward, another fatal shooting occurred in southwest Louisville, and a man died in a shooting in Okolona just before midnight.

“They gave me his belongings, his jewelry and his lighter. And that’s when I actually found out it was him,” said Melissa Flores, whose son died Saturday.

It’s the news no mother wants to hear. Melissa Flores was leaving the grocery store when she learned that her son, 18-year-old David Martinez, was found shot to death near train tracks in southwest Louisville.

“He didn’t deserve what happened to him. He’s a hard worker here. They’re pretty tough and he was willing to give me the perfect opportunity,” Flores said.

Martinez was one of five people shot in Louisville on Saturday.

“At first I didn’t really want to believe it. Because nobody believes in it,” said Laileonna Hunt, Martinez’s friend.

The first shootings occurred near Iroquois Park in the hot spot. Two men were killed and two other adults were injured.

Then a 31-year-old man was shot multiple times at the Devonshire Apartments in Lyndon on Saturday afternoon. He died at the scene of the accident.

“People lose another family member, another friend and they’re all young. And seriously, when is this going to stop?” said Kyndra Cooksey, who lives in the neighborhood where it happened.

Shortly thereafter, Martinez was shot multiple times and found on railroad tracks.

“I just don’t want him to be forgotten. There are a lot of unsolved murder cases that just get swept under the rug and I don’t want him to be one of those cases,” Hunt said.

Then, just before midnight, a man was killed in the Okolona neighborhood near Preston Highway.

“No one deserves to be murdered, no matter what they did or who they hurt. They have friends and family who are dealing with the consequences of what happened,” Flores said.

Flores said Martinez would have turned 19 at the end of this month. He also had a baby along the way.
