ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The City of Roanoke has announced that Western Virginia Water Authority workers will begin construction of a water main on Grandin Road on Monday, June 17.

Workers will replace a 1,950-foot water main on Grandin Road from Guildford Road to Brandon Avenue. A new 12-inch ductile iron water main will be installed during the overnight project.

The water authority says the new ductile iron line will replace an 8-inch cast iron water main that dates back to the 1940s and ’50s. This comes after the area recently experienced water main breaks that caused disruptions at Patrick Henry High School, local businesses and homes in the area.

Installing the new water main will improve water flow reliability and reduce interruptions.

During construction, water and fire protection will remain in operation. On-street parking in this area will be restricted to one side to allow construction crews to relocate the water main and repair the sidewalk.

The water authority says construction will take place at night and there will be traffic controls for lane closures. No detours are planned and both lanes will remain open during the day with steel plates.
