BRUNSWICK COUNTY – A regional water utility is asking its customers to limit watering.

Brunswick Regional Water & Sewer H2GO issued a Level 1 Water Conservation Alert on Wednesday, which occurs when the water system reaches 80% of capacity on a seven-day average.

According to a press release from H2GO, the problem was triggered by excessive watering by customers; demand on the water system has nearly doubled as a result. The utility has put restrictions in place until further notice. These include limiting spray irrigation to no more than two days per week, with use permitted on Wednesdays and Sundays for even-numbered lots and Tuesdays and Saturdays for odd-numbered lots.

In addition, H2GO recommends the use of rain and soil moisture sensors to reduce unnecessary irrigation.

“For properly maintained southern turf grasses, 1 inch of water per week is sufficient,” a press release states. “Irrigation systems should only be used to supplement weekly rainfall amounts.”

H2GO issues alerts to ensure public health, safety and customer welfare and to establish short- and long-term protection strategies.
