"Chemical accident" sends 7 people to hospital in Mesa

The “chemical incident” occurred on Thursday around 7:30 a.m., authorities said.

MESA, Arizona – Five Mesa employees and two program participants were hospitalized after a “chemical incident” in Mesa, authorities said.

Mesa Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene at the Brimall Aquatic Complex on Southern Avenue in Mesa. Authorities said sodium bicarbonate and bleach were mixed together and that the resulting mixture was “off-gassing,” meaning it was releasing chemical substances in a gaseous form.

The area was evacuated, authorities said. Seven people were taken to hospital.
