Investigation launched after Beloit police officer shoots and misses suspect | MyStateline

BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) – An investigation has been launched after a Beloit police officer opened fire on a suspect who allegedly charged at him but missed.

According to Police Chief Andre Sayles, officers responded to a 911 call from neighbors reporting a man running through the backyards of homes in the 800 block of Oak Street at around 1:34 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29.

The officers found Thomas Sykes at the crime scene. During the encounter, police said, Sykes “ran aggressively toward the officer.”

Despite receiving multiple requests to stop, Sykes “continued his aggressive behavior,” prompting the officer to fire his weapon.

The bullet missed and Sykes was arrested. No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Police interviewed witnesses and Sayles said officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the shooting.

Sayles said more information would be released once the investigation is complete.
