Shelters open due to flooding | News

The American Red Cross of the Texas Gulf Coast Region opened shelters in Harris, Liberty, Polk, San Jacinto and Tyler counties in response to recent flooding from rain and rising waters around rivers.

“This flooding is affecting many of our communities,” said Shawn Schulze, regional executive director of the Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross. “The work our teams and partners at the Red Cross of the Gulf Coast of Texas do is to ensure that every family in need has a hot meal, a safe place to sleep and a ton of food. hope, comfort and care!

Our Texas Gulf Coast disaster team is working with local county officials and emergency managers to determine the needs of multiple communities due to flooding. If you have been affected and need assistance from the Red Cross, please call 1-800-Red Cross.

Anyone planning to stay at a Red Cross shelter should bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene products, important documents and other comfort items. They should also include any special items for children, such as diapers, formula, and toys, as well as durable medical equipment and/or assistive technology, if applicable. Our first priority is to provide shelter and support to those affected, and financial donations are the fastest and most effective way to get help to those who need it most. FLOOD SAFETY

• Turn around, don’t drown! Stay off the roads. If you must drive and encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and take another direction.
• If you are stuck on a flooded road and the waters are rising around you, quickly get out of the car and move to higher ground.
• Tune in to your local radio, NOAA radio or news channels for the latest updates. If your neighborhood is prone to flooding, prepare to evacuate quickly if necessary. Follow evacuation orders and do not return until authorities declare it safe.
• Stay away from flood waters. Beware of snakes, insects and other animals that may be in or near floodwaters and your home.
• Keep children and pets away from hazardous sites and flood waters.
• If power lines are down, do not walk through puddles or standing water.
