Lee’s Summit police are dealing with the fallout from the viral Facebook hoax

PREVENT MORE OVERDOSE DEATHS. LEES SUMMIT recently had a major scare over FENTANYL, but it turns out the viral post online was completely false. KMBC NINE’S BRIAN JOHNSON EXPLAINS LIVE WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO STAY SAFE. BRIAN. YES, LAURA. Well, it all started with a wild story about a business card in the parking lot. THE POST FALSELY CLAIM THAT THE BUSINESS CARD WAS Amplified WITH FENTANYL, PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK, WHILE THE STORY WENT VIRAL ON SOCIAL MEDIA, TRAPPING OFFICIALS FOR HOURS. IT DIDN’T HAPPEN HERE. AND WHAT THIS PERSON SAYS IS REALLY WRONG. WE MUST BE RESPONSIBLE BEFORE PRESSING THE SHARE BUTTON BECAUSE WE CAN CREATE A LOT OF ARTIFICIAL FEAR. We can harm companies, we can harm people’s reputations. Police received dozens of emergency calls and inquiries on social media on Tuesday. The property manager of that mall alerted tenants to the scam. UNFOUNDED. WE DON’T BELIEVE THIS IS REALITY. Um, why would anyone think of something like that, I guess. WHY DO PEOPLE DO MANY THINGS RIGHT? Police say the DEA has done a good job alerting people to the real dangers of FENTANYL. THERE IS ENOUGH JUSTIFIED FEAR ABOUT FENTANYL. It’s a deadly drug and we don’t have to do anything to increase that fear. Bottom line: Police say think before you hit share or you could be liable for civil damages. Call and seek the truth. Instead of just blindly sharing something
