Teenager admits to causing fatal accident while drunk

What’s the matter

The 17-year-old boy from Pune accused in the Porsche crash has told police that he was drunk and could not remember the incident. NDTV reported.

The teenager is currently being held in an observation home while the juvenile court considers a request from police to try him as an adult.

He was reportedly filmed drinking shortly before the accident.

Why is this story important?

Two IT professionals – Aneesh Awadhiya (24) and Ashwini Koshta (24) – were killed in the early hours of May 19 when their motorcycle was hit by a speeding Porsche allegedly driven by the 17-year-old teenager.

According to investigators, the teenager was drunk at the time of the crime.

However, the JJB granted the teenager bail 15 hours after the incident on certain conditions, including that he write a 300-word essay on road accidents.

Due to severe criticism, the teenager was later sent to an observation home in Yerawada until June 5.

Several charges and arrests after the accident

Police are trying to secure the minor’s original blood sample, which was allegedly switched to prove he had not been drinking.

Recall that on Saturday, Pune police arrested the teenager’s mother for allegedly swapping her blood sample with his.

After the arrest of the minor, his father and his grandfather, this is the fourth arrest within the family.

The police had previously informed a district court that the teenager’s blood samples had allegedly been replaced by those of a woman.

Police file charges against teenager

Police are now working to build a “watertight” case against the teenager, even without the potentially contaminated blood tests.

The boy’s father was arrested a day after the crash while allegedly trying to hatch an escape plan.

He is accused of endangering his son’s health, forgery, fraud and criminal conspiracy.

In addition, two doctors and an errand boy were arrested by the police for allegedly tampering with the blood test of the 17-year-old defendant.

Car drives at 200 km/h: Witnesses

Witnesses reported that the car was traveling at 200 km/h when it hit the motorcycle with the victims.

The impact was so violent that both victims were thrown against parked cars and through the air.

Koshta died on the spot, while Awadhiya later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The teenager’s friends who were present during the incident confirmed his statement that he was drunk.

Teenager faces six months in prison

Notably, the JJB is currently considering a request to charge the teenager as an adult with intentional homicide, which is not considered murder. If convicted as a first-time offender of drunk driving, he could face up to six months in jail and a fine of Rs 10,000.
