Shark attack leads to closure of Del Mar beaches in San Diego County

DEL MAR, Calif. (CNS) – A 46-year-old man was attacked by a shark on Sunday, prompting the temporary closure of a beach in Del Mar in San Diego County, authorities said.

According to the city, the attack occurred around 9 a.m. about 100 yards offshore from the Beach Safety Center on 17th Street.

“The victim was transported by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries. Injuries included bites to the upper body, left arm and hand,” the city reported.

Lifeguards have temporarily closed beaches within a one-mile radius in both directions, roughly from Sixth Street to North Beach, to swimming and surfing. The water closure will remain in effect until at least 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim was part of a group of about a dozen swimmers who meet regularly for training in Del Mar, city officials said.
