1 dead and more than 20 injured in mass shooting in Ohio

A 27-year-old man was killed and more than 20 people were injured in a shooting in Akron, Ohio, early Sunday morning, according to Akron police.

Police received calls reporting gunshots shortly after midnight near Kelly Avenue and 8th Avenue, about 40 miles south of Cleveland. What happened leading up to the shooting is currently unclear.

“Officers were immediately dispatched and went to the area,” Akron police said in a news release. “Shortly after these calls were received, the call center received notifications from local hospitals that several people were admitted to the emergency room with gunshot wounds.”

At least 25 victims were shot, including the 27-year-old man who has since died. A weapon and “several dozen cartridge cases” were recovered at the scene, police said. Police had previously stated that a total of 27 people were injured in the shooting, including the deceased victim.

There are currently no suspects in custody and the motive for the shooting is not immediately apparent.

In a joint statement, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding said the city was “shocked by the destruction caused by senseless violence.”

“We will bring those responsible to justice and we need the help of our community to do so,” the statement said. “Those with information about this gruesome shooting must speak up to prevent further violence and retaliation.”

Callers who provide information to police can remain anonymous, police said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
