Police identify driver killed in Smyrna motorcycle crash – First state update

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Thursday afternoon in Smyrna.

Officials said on May 30, 2024 at approximately 1:12 p.m., a Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound on Sweet Corn Lane and stopped at a southbound stop sign on South Dupont Boulevard. At the same time, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound in the left lane of South Dupont Boulevard toward Sweet Corn Lane. Officials said the preliminary investigation shows the Jeep drove away from the stop sign to cross South Dupont Boulevard into the motorcycle’s path, causing the front of the motorcycle to strike the driver’s side of the Jeep.

The driver of the Jeep, a 69-year-old man, and his passenger, a 69-year-old woman, both of Smyrna, were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, 59-year-old Lance Sieben of Dover, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for about three hours while the accident scene was being investigated and cleared.
