Gunfire leads to police chase in Downtown Indy, two arrests

INDIANAPOLIS – Two people were arrested after an exchange of gunfire with IMPD led to a chase in downtown Indy early Saturday morning.

According to a press release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers working in the 100 block of South Meridian Street in downtown heard gunshots around 3:20 a.m.

Officers began searching for where the shots were coming from and spotted a person. At some point, police say, a shootout involving an officer occurred. Neither the officer nor the suspect were hit or injured.

According to police, the suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle, after which a short chase ensued, which ended with an accident involving parked vehicles in the 800 block of North East Street.

According to police, officers immediately arrested two people following the pursuit and a firearm was found.

“At this time, no one is injured on the officer involved and the suspect(s) are not believed to have any injuries as a result of the officer-involved shooting or the car crash,” IMPD said in a press release.

According to police, the officer involved in the shooting was wearing a body-worn camera, but it was not activated during the incident.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team arrived at the scene to conduct a criminal investigation.

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by the IMPD’s internal department.

The officer who fired his weapon was placed on leave, as is standard practice during an investigation into an officer-involved shooting.

The Use of Force Review Board, which consists mostly of civilians, conducts a mandatory hearing for every attempt to use deadly force against a person. This hearing takes place after the criminal proceedings have concluded.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Gary Toms with the Homicide Division at 317-327-3475. Alternatively, anyone with information may call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-TIPS.
