Minnesota man sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexual assault on Madison bike path in 2005

MADISON, Wisconsin (WMTV) – A Minnesota man was sentenced Friday to an initial two-decade prison term in connection with a 2005 sexual assault on a Madison bike path.

Aidison Yang, 42, was found guilty in Dane County District Court in February of three counts of first-degree sexual abuse by use or threat of a dangerous weapon.

Yang will initially be incarcerated in Wisconsin state prisons and will also be on extended probation for 20 years.

Attorney General Josh Kaul says he is grateful to everyone who fought for justice in this case.

“I am grateful that the defendant is finally being held accountable for the violent crimes he committed nearly two decades ago,” said Attorney General Kaul.

According to the Justice Department, prosecutors presented evidence during the trial that Yang threatened a woman with a knife and sexually assaulted her on a bike path in east Madison in 2005. A nurse was conducting a sexual assault investigation at the time.

Yang was arrested in Minnesota last February after DNA from the test kit was linked to him.

In the summer of 2022, a law designed to prevent a future backlog of untested kits containing evidence following a sexual assault in Wisconsin went into effect. Attorney General Kaul explained at the time that the measure would ensure that these kits were collected quickly and efficiently and sent to the Wisconsin State Crime Labs.
