Sumter man arrested after attempting to flee from deputy sheriff

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – A man was arrested Friday night while attempting to elude a deputy.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said a deputy on patrol noticed a car crossing the double yellow line on Boulevard Road, overtaking traffic, around 10:50 p.m. Friday.

Instead of obeying the blue lights, the driver, Maleeke Myers, accelerated to evade the deputy. The deputy followed Myers to a home on Rolling Creek Drive, where Myers and a passenger, Fredrick Anthony Woods, got out of the car and attempted to flee.

The deputy loudly ordered the couple to stop and get on the ground, SCSO said. The two complied and were held at gunpoint until a Sumter Police unit arrived at the scene.

SCSO determined that Myers was driving while under a suspended license, and upon searching his vehicle, they found a large amount of marijuana and a gun. Myers told officers that all of the drugs and guns belonged to him.

Myers was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana with intent to resell, failure to stop for a blue light and driving while license suspended. He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Detention Center, where he is being held on $105,000 bail.

Woods received a summons for having unsealed alcohol in the vehicle and was subsequently released.
