First responders take care of the dog of an injured driver after a life-threatening accident

HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Holmes County first responders share a heartbreaking story that arose from a frightening situation.

They responded to a traffic accident on Monday just after 8:00 p.m. on Interstate 10. A car left the highway at mile marker 109 and drove into the line of trees.

The driver, a 56-year-old man from Alexandria, Louisiana, suffered a severe cut on his head and was flown by helicopter to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay. But while paramedics tried to treat him, the man kept asking about Otis. It turns out that Otis is his little pug.

Bonifay Fire Department pulled Otis and his owner from the car. They said he was scared because of the accident, but physically he was fine.

Personnel from the Bonifay Fire Department and EMS and the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department took turns holding, petting and calming Otis.

A Holmes County Sheriff’s deputy is caring for Otis until his owner is released from the hospital.
