Officials search for man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman and kidnapped a toddler in LaPlace

LAPLACE, Louisiana (WGNO) – Officials with the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office are searching for a man wanted in connection with a sexual assault and kidnapping investigation that occurred Tuesday, May 28.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that the victim told investigators that a man sexually assaulted her and dragged her from her car while driving in LaPlace.


The man then allegedly drove away in the car with the woman’s eight-month-old child, identified by the sheriff’s office as Phil Baker.

Detectives from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office believe the suspect is Donnell Hyams.

The Louisiana State Police issued a Level II Endangered/Missing Child Alert for Phil.

LSP officials said Phil was last seen around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Belle Pointe Boulevard and U.S. 61.

According to LSP officials, Phil is described as 26 inches tall, 18 pounds, with black hair, blue eyes and a birthmark on his right shin.

According to LSP, Hyam is believed to be driving a blue Hyundai Sonata with a chrome rim on the rear passenger side and a black rim on the front passenger side.
