14-year-old girl arrested for murder of 79-year-old grandmother in Lauderdale Lakes – NBC 6 South Florida

A 14-year-old girl was arrested for the murder of her 79-year-old grandmother in Lauderdale Lakes, authorities said.

The teenager is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the May 23 killing of 79-year-old Yevheniia Koval, Broward Sheriff’s Office officials said Tuesday.

Officers and firefighters went to an apartment on Northwest 41st Street after receiving a call about an unresponsive woman.

They met Koval’s son, who said he had driven with his 14-year-old daughter to visit a friend and Koval.

When he returned, he found Koval lying unconscious on the floor with numerous bruises on his body, officials said.

Koval was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

The homicide unit began an investigation and the Broward Medical Examiner ruled Koval’s death a homicide.

The teenager was identified as a suspect in her grandmother’s murder and was taken into custody on Friday after being admitted to a hospital the same day as the incident.

The granddaughter was taken to the juvenile detention center. During the juveniles’ court appearance, prosecutors said they would charge them as adults, and the judge ordered them held in custody until their next hearing.
