VBPD chief: Police misled in shooting investigation

Police Chief Paul Neudigate described the complications of the investigation in his address to the Virginia Beach City Council on Tuesday afternoon.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate is calling for people he believes may have misled investigators in solving the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl near the Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival.

Neudigate said they no longer believe the shooting was the result of a fight at the fair, but rather that it was an isolated incident.

Speaking to the Virginia Beach City Council Tuesday afternoon, he described the complications of the investigation and said the city’s police department had been “fed a lot of misinformation.”

“We have a 15-year-old who lost her life and we have been repeatedly lied to by the individuals who were there,” Neudigate told council members. “No one has come forward as an independent eyewitness and if anything they have provided contrary information. So they have made it incredibly difficult for us to get justice for these families.”

Neudigate urged people to give Virginia Beach police any information, no matter how trivial.

The VBPD had previously stated that at least one person was in possession of a firearm and subsequently fired shots that struck the 15-year-old girl and the 18-year-old boy.

Both teens were taken to the hospital for treatment, where the girl, whose name has not been publicly released, succumbed to her injuries, according to VBPD. The 18-year-old man’s condition was downgraded to serious and he remains in intensive care, according to Neudigate.
