Teen shot dead on Spring Street – NBC New York

A 16-year-old boy was shot dead in a normally quiet Manhattan neighborhood, police said, and the search for the suspects is ongoing.

According to officials, shots were fired on Spring Street between Varick Street and Sixth Avenue in SoHo just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to a police source, the victim was in the outdoor Urban Plaza, a public courtyard on private property between two buildings, when several people rode up on Citi bicycles.

One of the people pulled out a gun and shot the boy in the back of the head and twice in the leg, police said. It is believed there was some sort of argument between the two groups before the shots were fired.

The victim was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries. It was not immediately clear whether he was the intended target.

The suspects immediately set off on the Citi motorcycles.

The scene of the shooting is near Broome Street Academy. Police were investigating whether the killed teenager was a high school student.

The accident site is also near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, which could potentially complicate evening rush hour commutes.
