The driver “never accepted that he was driving the car,” the officer added. “Instead, he was threatened and offered a large sum of money to make an initial statement,” the officer added.

A fresh case – the third in the case – has been filed against the grandfather and father based on the driver’s statement. “The grandfather was arrested while the father was remanded in custody,” the officer added. The teenager’s father has already been remanded in custody, the second FIR reveals.

“We will produce the grandfather in court today. We will also submit the production request for the father, who is in custody,” police said.

The Pune Police have also initiated a departmental inquiry against the two officers (currently suspended) who did not follow the ‘protocol’ that night. The police officers – Inspector Rahul Jagdale and Assistant Inspector of Police (API) Vishwanath Todkari – did not inform their superiors (DCP on night duty) about the incident.

The top officials only learned of the accident in the morning.

The car was traveling at about 200 km/h when it hit the two technicians – both in their 20s – on May 19.

Police said they were trying to determine the number of people in the car that day. “We are trying to determine the number of people in the car. In some cases, according to video surveillance, there are four people, in others five. The investigation is ongoing,” the officer said.
