Buffalo State University to cut 37 degree programs

Buffalo State University has announced plans to cut more than 30 degree programs. Twenty-seven of the 37 programs will be removed immediately, while 10 others are still under consideration for deactivation by spring 2025.

The cuts affect early childhood education, chemistry and urban studies programs, as well as several foreign language programs, including French, Italian and Spanish. Beyond programs, other reductions include credentials, concentrations, minors and certificates. A full list can be found here.

“I am confident that our Buffalo State University community can both ensure our long-term financial sustainability while continuing to do what we do best: providing a high-quality educational experience for our students said Buffalo State Interim President Bonita R. Durand. “With the support of elected leaders, SUNY leaders, our community partners, our campus community and our Buffalo State family, we will solidify our role as a leading academic institution that meets the evolving needs of students for years to come.

The 34 students, or approximately 0.6% of the student population, already registered for these offers will be able to complete the programs. The university will no longer admit students into these programs.

The university also said the previously announced 12-month hiring freeze would remain in effect, as would the phased retirement program.

The school has seen an enrollment decrease of 42% over the past decade, but saw an increase in first-time undergraduate enrollment in fall 2023.
