New Buffalo Bills play-by-play announcer could be a woman

The upcoming season for the Buffalo Bills is going to be a little different than the last.

John Murphy has been the play-by-play announcer for over 20 years. He was first hired as a play-by-play announcer in 2003, meaning he was the voice of the Bills for an entire generation of Bills fans.

His future in sports radio is uncertain after suffering a stroke in early 2023. Murphy described the details of the stroke and how his recovery went in a book titled “If These Walls Could Talk: Stories from the Buffalo Bills Sideline, Locker Room and Press Room.

Earlier this month, we learned that John Murphy would be retiring as the radio voice of the Buffalo Bills as he continues to recover. He worked in the broadcast industry for more than three decades and spent more than 20 years with the Bills.

Murphy has left some big shoes to fill, but they are looking for the next person to take on that announcer role.

The Buffalo Bills radio affiliate is looking for its next Buffalo Bills radio play-by-play announcer. And who knows… maybe it will be a woman?

This month, MLB celebrated a milestone: the first game was played with play-by-play announcers for both teams. Julia Morales of the Houston Astros and Jenny Cavnar of the Oakland Athletics were the first group of female broadcasters to serve as television play-by-play announcers during the same regular season game, according to Houston Public Media.

If MLB can do it, why not the NFL?

Anyone interested in the position is encouraged to apply and you can find this job posting here.

It will be difficult to find someone who has as much enthusiasm and pride for Buffalo as Murph, but someone will be chosen to replace him for the upcoming season. Why not you?
