Weekly Review: SLED Finds No Wrongdoing in Election Integrity Investigation

A State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigation commissioned by S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster has found that state employees accused of improperly providing voter registration forms to noncitizens committed no wrongdoing. The allegation led to multiple reports of threats against South Carolina election officials.

“The results of the preliminary investigation found that all voter registration forms provided to non-citizens were in compliance with federal law,” SLED concluded in its final report released May 16. “The forms instruct non-citizens not to complete them. “The form (and) the Legislative Audit Council has not identified any cases in which non-citizens voted in state elections.”

The original accusation was made by S.C. Rep. Adam Morgan, a leader of the avowedly far-right House Freedom Caucus, which has been at odds with mainstream conservative Republicans since its founding in 2021.

Morgan, who is challenging incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. William Timmons in the 4th District primary, responded to news of SLED’s findings with Twitter lashings, with Timmons saying Morgan was “caught in a lie” by the investigation. been.

“My ‘Republican’ opponent is FINE about voter registration forms being mailed to non-citizens in his district,” Morgan retorted. “I will work in Congress to stop the government from intentionally distributing voter registration forms to non-citizens. Secure our elections now!”
