Houston Dynamo FC draws 1-1 at home against FC Dallas

HOUSTON (May 18, 2024) – Houston Dynamo FC earned a 1-1 draw against rival FC Dallas in the second leg of the Texas Derby at Shell Energy Stadium this evening. The result extended Houston’s unbeaten streak against Dallas to 11 matches, dating back to August 2016.

Houston broke a scoreless tie in first-half stoppage time when captain Héctor Herrera played a ball to the defender Daniel Steres on the left side of the penalty box. Steres immediately sent the ball to the middle of the area to advance Amine Bassi, who sent the ball into the back of the net with his first touch for his first goal of the season. This play also marked Steres’ first assist of the season.

Dallas equalized in the 69thth minute when Bernard Kamungo sent a ball to the feet of Petar Musa at the edge of the penalty area, who directed the ball into the back of the net.

Goalie Steve Clark was called into action in the second minute after a ball from Jesus Ferreira across the box found Kamungo, who hit the shot with his left foot. The veteran goalkeeper pushed the ball away with ease for his first of two saves on the night.

Midfielder Arthur saw Houston’s first good chance of the day in 16th minute, firing a shot from the edge of the area after Dynamo had strung together several passes in the final third. However, the Brazilian’s attempt was saved by goalkeeper Maarten Paes.

Artur scored another powerful shot in the 35thth minute after Herrera, who made his third start of the season this evening, He sent a ball to his midfield teammate at the edge of the area, but Paes again managed to alleviate the danger.

Dynamo thought they had opened the scoring in the 43rdrd minute when a corner from Herrera finds the head of the defender Erik Sviatchenkobut the Danish international’s powerful header went just wide of the post.

Herrera tried his luck from outside the box after a quick turn in first-half stoppage time, but the attempt went straight to Paes. A minute later, the midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla fired another deep shot that forced a diving save from the Dallas goalkeeper.

Before Aliyou Ibrahim scored a shot on goal in the 60thth minute after Carrasquilla placed it on the left side of the area. However, the low attempt at the near post was not enough to find the back of the net.

Clark was called into action again in ’66th minute when a header from Sebastian Ibeagha from a corner bounced past the stopper, who managed to push the ball away from danger.

Clark left the match in the 73rdrd minute after Artur inadvertently punched him in the face. Goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell entered the match to replace the 38-year-old for his first appearance of the season.

Ibrahim found his way into the box in the 94thth minute, but his attempt was rejected by Paes.

Two minutes later, Sviatchenko managed another powerful header from a corner, but the ball went wide of the post.

The Dynamo closes out the May slate with a road trip to take on the LA Galaxy on Saturday, May 25, with kickoff scheduled for 9:30 p.m. CT.
