Worli police arrest a man for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman who was seeking job help

Worli police have arrested 50-year-old Joseph Xavier for allegedly raping a 24-year-old woman in Worli on Friday. The court has remanded him in police custody until May 24. Xavier was arrested within hours after the woman approached police about a rape following a meeting for a job.

According to police, the victim, a resident of Thane, was looking for a job and sought help from a male friend. Her friend Zuber gave her Xavier’s cell phone number and advised her to contact him. On Thursday evening, Zuber called and told her that Xavier wanted to meet her in Khar. She immediately took a taxi, where both men joined her. The trio later went to a hotel with Zuber’s friends, drank alcohol and finally left around midnight.

According to the complaint, Xavier offered to drop the woman off at the train station, but later claimed there were no trains available. He advised her to sleep in his car, where he allegedly raped her around 3am. He is said to have threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke about the incident to anyone. The woman told a lawyer friend about the ordeal, who advised her to file a complaint.
