Redacted version of Falcicchio sexual harassment report released

This redacted release of the 117-page report comes just days after the unredacted version was leaked to The Washington Post.

WASHINGTON — On Friday, D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau released a redacted version of an independent counsel’s review of the District’s investigation into sexual harassment complaints against John Falcicchio, the mayor’s former chief of staff and deputy mayor for planning and economic development.

Falcicchio was formerly the deputy mayor of D.C. He worked with Mayor Muriel Bowser for eight years. He resigned in March 2023, before sexual assault allegations against him became public. A week ago, WUSA9 learned that the D.C. government had settled two victims’ complaints against him.

This redacted release of the 117-page report comes just days after the unredacted version was leaked to The Washington Post. That version included the names of the victims involved, which raised questions from the victims’ lawyers and Nadeau.

On Tuesday, Nadeau responded to former Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio’s confidential report of sexual harassment that was leaked to the media. The internal investigation was announced before the victims themselves had a chance to read the review.

“It’s shameful,” Nadeau said. “I can only imagine how they must feel.”

One of the lawyers provided WUSA9 with a statement saying:

“We are deeply disappointed and angry that more than a year after our clients’ courageous decision to come forward, the D.C. government has still not learned how to treat survivors. The conduct and secrecy surrounding the release of the Inspector General’s report is abhorrent.”

Days after speaking to WUSA9, Nadeau released an edited version of the report, which can be read online here.

“I hope and expect that this report will lead to actions that will make future incidents less likely and make the reporting, investigation and response process more transparent and effective,” Nadeau said. “What these women went through is terrible. No one should have to suffer like he did, especially at the hands of someone in a position of authority and power. No employee should feel unsafe at their workplace. No employee should be a victim of sexual harassment and no one should fear retaliation for coming forward.”

In addition, Nadeau is working on a bill that would create a D.C. law that incorporates elements of the mayor’s 2023 executive order that prohibits sexual relationships between supervisors and their employees and requires increased on-the-job training.
