The son of the Sudanese military leader has died from his injuries in a motorcycle accident in Türkiye

The son of Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah Burhan has died two months after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in the Turkish capital Ankara, according to the Turkish state news agency

ANKARA, Turkey – The son of Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah Burhan died in hospital on Friday, two months after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in the Turkish capital Ankara, Turkey’s state news agency reported.

Mohammed Fattah Burhan Rahman has been treated at a hospital in Ankara since the March 6 accident in which his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on the outskirts of the city, Anadolu Agency said.

The private news agency DHA said he was thrown several meters from his motorcycle by the force of the collision and was being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Burhan, Sudan’s de facto leader, and other family members have been informed of the death, the DHA reported.

There was no immediate comment from the Turkish authorities. Representatives of the Sudanese embassy could not be reached for comment.

Sudan plunged into chaos in mid-April 2023 when long-simmering tensions between its military led by Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commanded by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo erupted in street battles in the capital Khartoum. Fighting has spread to other parts of the country, particularly urban areas and the western Darfur region.

Earlier this year, the Somali president’s son was convicted by a Turkish court of “manslaughter” after a diplomatic car he was driving struck a motorcycle courier on a highway in Istanbul. The court sentenced him to two and a half years in prison, but later commuted the sentence to a fine.
