A statement released Saturday by prosecutors said 75-year-old Ronnie Wiggs accompanied his wife to a hospital in Independence, Missouri, so she could receive a new medical port device for her kidney dialysis.

Prosecutors then said Wiggs left the hospital but returned when staff found his wife unresponsive. She was resuscitated but declared brain dead. She died on Saturday.

Then, Wiggs said, he covered her nose and mouth to keep from screaming while she lay in bed and strangled her, KSHB reported.

Within earshot of at least one hospital worker, Wiggs admitted, “I did it. I killed her. I choked her,” news station KCTV reported, citing a police affidavit filed in court.

After Wiggs was taken to the police station, he told investigators that he could no longer care for his wife or pay her medical bills, the prosecutor’s statement said.

Wiggs said he previously tried to kill his wife while she was in a rehabilitation facility, but she woke up and told him not to do that again, the statement said.

He said he had planned to kill his wife another time when she was hospitalized, but he didn’t have the chance because she was hooked up to multiple monitors.
