Two were arrested during pro-Palestine protests in downtown Orlando

Two people were arrested at a pro-Palestinian rally at Lake Eola Park in Orlando on Saturday. According to Orlando police, around 1,200 people were present at the demonstration in Lake Eola Park on Saturday afternoon. Two people were arrested and face charges of assault on a law enforcement officer, a department statement said. The OPD also said they used a “hand-held chemical warfare agent” against a group of people, causing unrest. Here’s what protesters said at the rally. Police reacted hostilely toward speakers with megaphones and arrested one of them. Protesters also said several people were injured and hit by the chemical spray. The demonstration was organized by the Florida Palestine Network, Jewish Voices for Peace South FL, Bay Area Dream Defenders and several other groups. The event was attended by people from across the state. Organizers said the rally served, among other things, to commemorate the beginning of the Nakba on May 15, 1948, which displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians following the establishment of the Israeli state after World War II. In 2023, the United Nations will mark the 75th anniversary since the Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in English. Protests and rallies across the United States against U.S. involvement in Israel’s war against the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip have been ongoing since the October 7 Hamas attack that killed hundreds in Israel. Since October 7, more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, most of them civilians.
