Mother of man killed in stroke scolds murderer

A former bar security guard was sentenced to life in prison Friday for killing a 37-year-old father who was eating at a concession stand outside an Ohio bar.

Chrystian Foster, 34, learned his fate in the death of Gregory Coleman Jr. Friday in Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.

In court, Coleman’s mother, Geraldine Coleman, scolded Foster, local CBS affiliate WBNS reported.

“His daughter, our granddaughter, she is so badly injured. She loved her father and he adored her. You took that away from her,” she said of the 10-year-old, the station reported. “They have caused so much damage. I could never forgive you for what you did.”

His father added: “I think I will live the rest of my life without him, but I will always remember this courtroom and all the good that happened to get him justice.”

“He was just everything you could want in a son,” he added. “I loved him more than anyone would ever know.”

Foster, whose attorney said he would appeal, apologized for the incident, the outlet reported.

“That night was a hard night. “A lot of things went wrong, things I never intended,” Foster said. “I made a mistake and I apologize for my mistake.”

Foster was the second person to be detained in the attack. Dwayne Cummings, 40, also a bar security guard, was sentenced in February to life in prison with a possible parole period of 15 years, according to a news release from the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office.

His lawyers also said he would appeal and Cummings has apologized, local NBC affiliate WCMH reported.

“I didn’t want this to happen. I apologize for my actions and my actions alone,” he said, the station reported.

Cummings struck Coleman Jr., a bartender, in the early morning hours of Sept. 5, 2022, outside a bar in the 1000 block of North High Street in Columbus, prosecutors said. After the victim fell and hit his head on the ground, Cummings and Foster hit him as he lay motionless and then ran away, prosecutors said.

At 2:09 a.m., Columbus police arrived at the scene and saw the victim lying partially unresponsive in the street.

The victim fell into a coma, was taken to a hospital and placed on life support machines. Police weren’t sure if he would make it.

Attorney General Anthony Pierson called it “a senseless violent attack” that denied a daughter “the ability to hug, talk to or laugh with her father.”

Police posted information about the case on social media while Coleman remained on life support and the case was listed in the City of Columbus’ Homicide Cold Case Unit Archive, asking for help solving the case and “the family of this one.” “To provide justice for the victim.”

Arrest warrants for attempted murder were filed against Foster and Cummings on September 13, 2022, police said. After Coleman died on Sept. 18, 2022, authorities changed the charge against her to murder, police said in a Facebook post.

The victim’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the defendants and the now-closed bar, according to court documents posted on the WCMH website.
