Student, 18, found dead in parking lot two days after disappearance

An 18-year-old high school student from North Carolina was found dead in a Charlotte movie theater parking lot on Thursday, May 9, two days after she disappeared.

Matthews police identified the deceased woman as Olivia Bruce in a Facebook update.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers discovered Bruce’s body. According to a news release, officers responded to a call on the 7800 block of Rea Road in Charlotte just before 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed that a “female subject” who was “initially reported missing to Matthews Police Department” was found dead at the scene.

“Unfortunately, a deceased woman was found today in the 7800 block of Rea Road in Charlotte and identified as Olivia Bruce. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detectives are currently conducting an investigation into her death,” the department said.

They added that there was “currently no evidence of foul play.”

Aerial footage from outside the Regal Stonecrest at the Piper Glen movie theater taken by WSOC-TV showed the parking lot cordoned off by caution tape and several patrol cars.

According to Matthews Police, Bruce was last seen leaving Providence High School on Tuesday, May 7th.

The Matthews Police Department identified Bruce as a “black female, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 110 pounds, with blue hair and brown eyes” who was “wearing light gray sweatpants, a multi-colored shirt and possibly Converse shoes.” I drive a gray 2017 Chevrolet Volt, the time of the disappearance.

According to WSOC-TV, a letter from Providence High School Principal Tracey Harrill was sent to families following Bruce’s death.

“I am deeply saddened to announce that one of our students, 18-year-old Olivia Kathleen Bruce, a senior at our school, has died. “We pray for her family and friends as they grieve the loss of her life,” Harril said, according to WSOC-TV. “Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it occurs suddenly.” We can feel a variety of emotions: shock, sadness, or confusion. The most important thing is that we take care of each other and support each other.”

According to the outlet, the letter ended with Harril telling families that a crisis response team was available to assist with crisis counseling.
