Man arrested in Guyana after shooting 6-year-old on July 4, Maryland police say

A man has been arrested in the killing of a six-year-old boy who was shot during a Fourth of July neighborhood party in Temple Hills, Maryland.

Rakeem Gilgeours, 33, has been charged with second-degree murder and other related charges in connection with the killing of Ahsan Payton. Police said Gilgeours was arrested in Guyana and deported to the United States. He is currently in Florida awaiting extradition, police said.

“We believe we have brought one of the accused to justice for murder,” said police chief Malik Aziz.

Aziz said Gilgeours fled the United States after the shooting and police are trying to arrest at least one other person involved in the shooting.

“Be a man and turn yourself in,” Aziz told anyone else who might have been involved in the shooting.

The shooting happened about 7:40 p.m. at an annual neighborhood festival with bouncy houses and festive face painting in the 4500 block of Akron Street, police and a witness said. When police arrived, they found Ahsan seriously injured and took him to the hospital. He died on July 6.

Two adults also suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting, police said.

Longtime residents of Akron Street said the neighborhood has been hosting Independence Day celebrations for five years and has never seen such violence. Some neighbors host a free party with games and barbecue that residents say draws strangers.

Prince George’s County District Attorney Aisha Braveboy said the community contributed to an arrest.

“They are our partners. The reason we are here today is because the public has become involved.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
