In a dramatic finale of the match between Morocco and Argentinawhich ended 2-1 in favour of Morocco, FIFA has issued a statement regarding the controversial events at the end of the game.

The match between Argentina and Morocco on Wednesday, July 24, at the Summer Olympics has caused a major scandal in the football world. The referee did not recognize Argentina’s equalizing goal almost two hours after the end of the match and continued the game after Moroccan fans stormed the field and threw fireworks at the Argentine players. This decision prompted FIFA to take action. The events at the start of the men’s football tournament were highly unusual and controversial.

Argentina equalised after the referee added 15 minutes of stoppage time. When play resumed two hours after the crowd riots, the goal was ruled offside and only two minutes of stoppage time were played. Morocco eventually won 2-1, sparking immediate and widespread complaints from the Argentine team.

FIFA decision on the Argentina-Morocco scandal

Following the complaints, FIFA has taken a decision regarding the incidents that occurred. “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided, in accordance with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, to appoint an integrity expert to assist in investigations into possible breaches of FIFA regulations. This follows the incidents that occurred during the match between the teams of Argentina and Morocco on 24 July 2024 at the Geoffroy Guichard Stadium in Saint-Etienne, France, which was part of the group stage of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024.”

Argentina now needs to beat Iraq on Saturday to avoid elimination. The team was also shocked to learn that midfielder Thiago Almada had personal items worth $50,000 stolen upon his arrival in France.

Morocco will face Ukraine in a match that could secure Morocco first place, depending on the results of the other matches.
