Man killed while changing tire on Highway 101 in California. identified

The man killed Saturday on Highway 101 in Salinas has been identified by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. According to the CHP, four vehicles collided on southbound Highway 101 south of Laurel Drive. The crash was initially reported at 1:07 p.m. According to the CHP, Virginio Cortez, 77, of Salinas, was changing the tire of a silver Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck on the right shoulder. A maroon Nissan Altima was parked on the right shoulder in front of the pickup truck and a 38-year-old Salinas woman was also standing next to the pickup truck. At the same time, Jose Ramiro Sanchez Jr., 24, of Salinas, was driving a black 2005 Acura TL in Lane 2. As he approached the pickup truck, he veered off the road and struck the Salinas woman, according to the CHP. The Acura continued south, striking Cortez and eventually crashing into the pickup, CHP said. The pickup was pushed into the rear of the Nissan, causing the pickup to roll over on its right side. The Acura also spun and crashed into a white 2003 Honda Pilot driven by a 29-year-old Soledad man. At least two children were in the Honda, but no one was injured, CHP said. All remained at the scene after the crash. Cortez died of his injuries at the scene, CHP said. The Salinas woman suffered abdominal bruising and was taken to Natividad Medical Center for serious injuries. Sanchez Jr. suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was taken to Natividad Medical Center for treatment, CHP said. Sanchez Jr. was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

At the same time, 24-year-old Jose Ramiro Sanchez Jr. of Salinas was driving a black 2005 Acura TL in Lane 2. As he approached the pickup truck, he left the road and struck the Salinas woman, according to CHP.

The Acura continued south, entered Cortez and eventually crashed into the pickup truck, CHP said.

The pickup was pushed into the rear of the Nissan, causing the pickup to overturn onto its right side.

The Acura also skidded and struck a white 2003 Honda Pilot driven by a 29-year-old Soledad man. At least two children were in the Honda, but no one was injured, CHP said.

After the accident, everyone remained at the scene.

Cortez succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident, CHP said.

The woman from Salinas suffered abdominal bruising and was taken to Natividad Medical Center for serious injuries.

Sanchez Jr. suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was taken to Natividad Medical Center for treatment, CHP said.

Sanchez Jr. was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence
