1 dead, another in critical condition after head-on collision in Wells County

WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – One passenger is dead and another is in critical condition following a head-on collision in Wells County early Friday morning.

According to a press release from the Wells County Sheriff’s Department, this happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday on State Road 116 northwest of County Road 200 West near Rockcreek Township.


According to the sheriff, a gray Jeep was traveling northwest on State Road 116 when it crossed the center line for an unknown reason. A red Chevy pickup truck was traveling southeast when it spotted the Jeep in the oncoming lane.

While attempting to avoid the Jeep, the driver of the pickup truck swerved. The driver of the Jeep swerved at the same time, causing both vehicles to collide head-on.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wells County Coroner. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The names of those involved in the accident will be kept secret until the family has been notified. It is currently unclear whether they will be made public.
